Biography
Before the war John was assigned to the USS Blackhawk (Office Staff, ComDesRom 29)April 1940-41 (included tour of the China coast)

Assigned Commander in Chief, Asiatic Fleet, Office Staff, Manila, P.I., July 1941 to Dec. 25th, 1941 (Manila declared an Open city) and transferred to Bataan. Assigned USN Shore Patrol, Mariveles, P.I. Dec. 25, 1941 to April 9th 1942 (fall of Bataan) Escaped and assigned to 4th Marines, US Naval Reserve Bat., Corregidor, April 9th 1942 to May 6th 1942(fall of Corregidor).

1st Draft to Japan, Sept. 1942 arriving in Tokyo late Nov. 1942. Shipped by rail and arrived on Thanksgiving Eve 1942, (Yodagawa Bunso near Kobe, Japan). April 1943, sent to Ichioka stadium hospital. Used as experimental patient in May 1943, Last of 1944, transferred to Headquarters Camp #1, Osaka - Camp destroyed on June 1, 1945. Camp personnel moved to another camp for temporary housing prior to moving by rail to the very northern tip of Honsho. (Noheji or Hachinow)

This last camp was in a rice field next to an AA battery.
