Korean War

(Jun 25, 1950 Jul 27, 1953)
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910, Following Japan's surrender in World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones along the 38th parallel by the United States and the Soviet Union. The Korean War began when North Korean forces invaded the Southern Zone. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal force, came to the aid of South Korea. China sided with North Korea, and the Soviet Union also gave some assistance. The conflict eventually degraded into a war of attrition, and the two sides agreed to cease fighting on July 27, 1953. The armistice created a Demilitarized Zone and officially split North and South Korea into separate countries. No peace treaty was ever signed, however, and technically speaking, the two Koreas remain at war.
