Hello,
My name is Karen Myers. My father is Jack Kropf. In 1945 he was a prisoner of war at Afuna. It was located between Tokeyo and Yokahoma. He was trying to find info about it in the POW Medsearch Camp Descriptions in the April Ex-Pow Bulletin, but it is not listed. Is there anyway to get more information.
Thank you,
Karen

My father had a fatal crash flying an F86, in Sept 1954. During WWII, he had been a POW at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth, Germany the last year of the war. He had been assigned to the 79th fighter squadron out of KingsCliff, England, where he was flying P38's on RR strafing missions when hit. While at Luft 1 he recorded names and events in a book that I now have. Thanks to ex-POW organizations, I've located some of the men from his list who knew him, and they have sent me pictures and letters about what it was like to be there. These men all have brave stories that has brought a great sense of pride to all of us. I'm hoping to hear from more, and only sorry that I was not able to start this endevor earlier.

In the last posting I requested a caterpillar club pin, but failed to thank all of you for your (above and beyond) service to our country. You all stand in that long unbroken line of patriots that have been dedicated to the preservation of our way of life. I can not really imagine what it was like to be walking at the point of a bayonet on bataan, or locked up by the Japanese, N. Koreans V.C. or N.V.A. Not to mention leaving an aircraft that isn't flying anymore, only to be incarcerated once you hit the ground. From me, and generations still unborn THANK YOU.

I am a Viet Nam combat veteran (light weapons infantry) assigned to the 11th Armored Cavalry 1968-69. Being born in 1946, I was always very interested in W.W.2 aviation, and for the last twenty five years have collected many things related to the Army Air Forces of that time. I am looking for a caterpillar club pin that has the words caterpillar club in silver on the black body of the caterpillar. On the back of the pin are the words WACO ROCH N.Y. STERLING. This is the only caterpillar club pin that I am missing. If anyone would have a duplicate and wishes to sell it, please contact me, THANK YOU. Dave Summers

My Grandad - Arthur Taylor (known as Jimmy) was captured in Hong Kong Christmas Day 1941. He was a Warrant Engineer in the RN based at HMS Tamar. Although I have his diary of the years he was a captive, it does not give many details as to his whereabouts. He keeps mentioning Kawasaki Station and Shinagawa (where men went but didn't come back). He was killed in July 1945- only days before the end of the war during an American air raid and his remains are buried in Yokohama cemetry. He mentions many names in his diary including Dr. Bill Stewart,Dr. Damare, SPO Yates, Lt.Sherry, Chief Stoker South and Lt. Perkins.I also have a letter dated 10th September 1944 that Mrs B.J.Snater from Minniapolis sent to my Gran. It said that she had "received a message from my husband who is with yours".
I would like to hear from anyone that knew of my Grandad or the camps that he was kept in. Perhaps the family of Mr & Mrs Snater would be kind enough to contact me. I just want to fill in the blanks of my Grandad's life.

How can I express my deep, heartfelt gratitude and thankfulness enough to the veterans of our military? As a young man, who has never experienced the hardships and struggles encountered by these men and woman, I am truly indebted to them. My eyes well-up with tears when I think how hard these people fought for my freedom. I am proud to be an American. This website is wonderful. I have spent endless hours reading the biographies, which are so vivid and moving. I can't get enough of the stories, experiences, and hardships encountered by American POW's. Please continue the excellant work and I look forward to learning more about our country's history. Also, if anyone might know of similar websites, please send me an email. Thank you and God Bless.

POW Camp Stalag Luft VII near Blechhammer
Sent: 2.32 PM - 3/9 2001
Stalag Luft VII was a small camp at Bunkau near Kreutzberg not far from Blechhammer. Many of the 15th AF airmen who were shot down on the Blechhammer raids were interned there. In January, 1945, they were marched to Standort on the Oder River and then shipped by train to Luckenwalde (spelling may be wrong). I am interested in talking to ex-POW's about what this camp was like. I have a friend who escaped from the camp and made it to an OSS base in Slovakia and got back to Italy.

They all remained POW's until liberated by General Patton's troops. My father now lives in New Jersey (address/phone below) and is interested in contacting the other two men. Their names are Bill Clark and Tom Brooks. Of course, my father would be very happy to hear from anyone from that era.

My closest friend in Stalag Luft 3, Ed Rafferty, was one of the 15 men that shared our one room. I knew he
was from Pa so I went to Yahoo and found 7 names and addresses of "Ed Rafferty" living in Pa. This was in 1999. I wrote letters (made copies) to all 7. Received 3 letters and a phone call saying "never heard of him" and "He is my cousin". By following this lead I contacted his widow. He had died only the year before. Corresponded with his widow and received pictures of him and his children. My E-mail address is ADSingle@AOL.com

I am trying to find information regarding the Hoten Prison camp in Mukden Manchuria. My grandfather passed away on 2/9/01 and we found a letter he had written about his experiences as a POW in Japan. He was based in Piardoba India and flew B-29 missions out of Chiung-Lai China. He and his crew were shot down on December 21, 1944 and eventually transferred to a compound built for them near the Hoten Prison Camp. I am hoping to locate any crewmembers or others imprisoned with him or any information about the camp. His name was Olen "Bud" Hermann and was with the 462nd bombardment group.

I was captured on the Anzio Beachhead January 30, 1944, was marched through Rome with others for the benefit of Kraut propaganda photos and after short time in Munich, was sent to 2B. I was put to work on a nearby farm near Versin in Pomerania. I escaped in mid-May but was recaptured June 6 on the Baltic coast and returned to 2B. Sent to work on a town Kommando, I escaped again but was recaptured (found unconscious on the roadside, sick with malaria) and returned again to 2B. The camp was evacuated in January and we were marched west. I escaped to column in early March and regained Allied (British) lines April 14 near Celle. I hitchhiked to Brussells where I got a British kit and was flown to Paris, then to Camp Lucky Strike and home.

As a long time member of AXPOW, I was glad to view your website. It is excellent. As a civilian internee of Santo Tomas Internment Camp, Manila, Philippines from January 1941 to April 1945 I hope many people view your site. Many of my relatives were interned with me at STIC and my father was captured at Corregidor and died on his second "Hell" ship bound for Japan for slave labor. As the president and Executive Director of The Center for Internee Rights, Inc. (CFIR) I hope you and your viewers will view our website at www.expows.com  CFIR represents WWII POWs, internees and those in-hiding from the Pacific. Our website tells you much of what we are doing to bring justice, recognition and compensation for those brutalized by Japan in WWII. Our stories need to be told since most folks know little or nothing about the Pacific War and the other "holocast".

The reason I am sending this, is to inform you of his passing, on the 8th of January, 2001, in Sacramento, California. I do know that he had attended several American Ex-POW functions around the country, so you can imagine I was surprised to not see his name listed in the Biographies section in this website.
He was a unique man; a patriot; an excellent father, and my personal hero. He will be missed, and hopefully never forgotten. I just thought your organization should know of this country's loss. Thank you for your time, and thank all of you for your contribution to the United States--I salute you, one and all.

Taken prisoner of war on May 12th and confinement was at Stalag 2B until turned back over to US control on May 3 1945. I am trying to find people who may have known my father, as he passed away last year. I want to learn as much as I can about his time there, what he went through, and the men that he shared this time with. Also I would like to know how to get him listed in your web site in the Bio. s a POW of stalag 2b. I would like for others that might have known him to know what a great father he was, and how proud I am to be his daughter. I must tell you though that he did get his POW medal but never took it out of the box. As he felt it was such a little show of support for what all the pow's of WW II went through. He felt that it should have been presented to him, not just sent thought the mail, in a box without anything enclosed.

Has anyone got any information on this? Just before the liberation he and other prisoners were marched out of the camp and taken to Ettrigen. Anybody know what the Germans had in mind ? Thank you very much for the history lesson. My Father died in a Jap POW camp and now at this late stage in my life I am trying to discover something about a time long ago. There was never anything written for so many years or maybe it was just because there was no internet to allow a search for a part of our lives lost in time. It is also possible that our country did not want us to know the truth as during my reading I saw where the men liberated were told to never talk about it and were coerced if they did. It took fifty years, which in this country seems to be the rule, for information to start flowing. Thanks again it was very enlightening.

I was a menber of 'C'Company, 65th Engr. Comat Bn, 25th Infantry Div. from Occup. Duty l948 in Japan until Nov. 27, l950, Korea, when our company was overrun by the Chinese in the area of Ipsok/Kunu-ri and I was wounded and taken prisoner. I remained a POW of the N.Koreans and Chinese for 33 Months before being repatriated. Most of the Company was killed or taken prisoner during the Chinese assault. Many died on a forced 'death march' north after capture. Many hundreds died in the prison camp the first year.

My wife's grandfather, James Francis Murray, was a POW in WWII. His service records show no trace of his time as a prisoner (except date of capture and date of release). He knows that his last prison was Stalag 13D, Nuremburg. We are planning his trip back to France/Germany since the war, sometime in early March and would like any additonal information that any of his fellow servicemen can provide for our trip.
Thank you and god bless.

I was in the 103rd Combat Engineers 28th Division and was surrendered by my Captain Jarret in Dec. 1944. We were on a forced march when my legs gave out and I was seperated from my unit, and eventually sent to Stalag 11B. There I met three other Americans and we became friends. On Friday, April 13, 1945 we were being marched by the Germans to another prisoner camp farther into Germany when American planes appeared to be going to strafe the column so we all scattered. My friends and I managed to escape into the woods and three days later met up with an English unit who eventually got us back to hospital in Oxford England where we were interviewd by Winston Churchill and after about 30 days I was sent home and lost contact with my buddies.

My father was a Japanese POW. His ship, the USS Penguin was bombed on December 8, 1941 at Guam. He was captured shortly thereafter and spent the entire war in Japan. He passed away 10 years ago. I have a diary that he was forced to keep, that outlines some of his stay in the camps. I have transcribed it and would like to know if you would like a copy of the transcription. It includes a POW photo of him. Let me know. Thank you for this site. Sincerely, Larry R. Patterson ( Son of Lt. Rae Patterson, USN Ret.)

I am the brother of Nolan J. Reech who was a German POW and was held in either or both camps Stalaag LuftI or Luft IV. Nolan was shot down while on a mission over the Balkans in 1944. He spoke very little of his wartime experience and died at the age of 45. We are trying to piece together as much information as we can for the family and his grandchildren. We know that at one time he was in Luft IV. We are looking for information on his MACR and perahaps someone who knew him while he was imprisioned. His plane was a B-24, the JAZZER. Nolan was a radio operator and gunner. We have written off for his records, but so far we haven't received anything. If you can help we would be very thankful. God Bless. Ray Reech

What in world is SVC Klump thinking about saying we do not need National Service Officers now the fellows are getting up there in age. There are still many ex-pow's that do not even have a compensation claim or know how to do it. I really do not believe we need to have a man that thinks this way should be in National Office --especially for our next National Commander.

I came upon this great site while surfing the net. I am currently doing research with hopes to find WWII POW Officers captured and held in Germany.

I am doing research for a movie that I am affiliated with that will begin filming next month (February). I am interested in POWs that would be willing to share their story with the star of the movie so he can get a better insight of that period in order to portray his roll as authentically as possible.

If you would be willing to help out with this project please respond to my email address (cabiddle@earthlink.net)with your name, rank, camp held at and a daytime telephone number to respond to you.

I am specifically looking for men residing on the east coast (preferrable NY and NJ) and the west coast (LA, CA and surrounding area).

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Keep up the great work with the website. My husband is a retired USMC GySgt. (1972-1995). I know how important it is to keep the men that served (and currently serve)our country in our thoughts and memory.

Re. Confirmation Secretary of Department of Veterans Affairs

Dear Veteran Service Organization,

I find myself concerned with President Elect Bush’s selection of the new Secretary for the Department of Veterans Affairs, Anthony J. Principi. During Mr. Principi’s previous service with the Department of Veterans Affairs, it appeared that his focus was on clearing the path for his own financial future and other special interests. He was responsible for the Total Quality Management process (TQM) being implemented within the Department of Veterans Affairs and other Federal agencies. This process cost the taxpayers millions of dollars and did little to improve benefits for veterans or improve Department of Veterans Affairs staffing. In effect, it resulted in a belief that one could do more with fewer resources. In reality, it served to only provide decreased services, more dependence on contracted services, and a golden egg to the corporation providing the copyrighted training.

Mr. Principi also appears to advocate services being provided by the public sector (contracting) for our veterans in lieu of increasing Department staff and resources. In the "Principi Repot" as well as other initiatives, Mr. Principi outlines the lack of services and short falls of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Princippi has advocated and cleared the pathway for more services to veterans being provided by private contractors. I find this quite ironic considering the fact that he serves as President of QTC Medical Services (as well as other business interests), a firm that has been awarded a multimillion dollar contracts by the Department of Veterans Affairs to conduct medical examinations of individuals who have filed claims for VA disability benefits. Further, Mr. Principi was instrumental in the implementation of the veterans transition program (TAP and DTAP) who’s key purposes is to identify separating service members who may be entitled to disability benefits. Through this process individuals are provided comprehensive evaluations to determine potential benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Mr. Principi’s business ventures provide these very services.

One would certainly have to question such patterns and the self serving motivation for supporting policies and procedures. I think that deeper questions need to be asked that would clearly distinguish between self motivating agenda and serving the needs of America’s veterans. In nearly every survey conducted by the Department of Veterans Affairs and "Focus Groups" with veterans, the veteran prefer working with Department of Veterans Affairs staff and not contracted service providers.

I am not suggesting any wrong doing by Mr. Principi, however the mere illusion of conflict or self serving motivations is, in my opinion, reason for non-confirmation. Mr. Principi has clearly received significant financial gain as a result of his own initiatives while serving the Department of Veterans Affairs. One would have to question how the nations VA employees could embrace the leadership of a gentleman who advocates the elimination of their livelihood and jobs so he can benefit from his own personal business ventures. How can the nation’s veterans trust an individual that advocates the spending of millions of dollars for contracted services when they clearly express desire to work with VA staff.

I realize that I am one voice among millions, but felt the need to express my concerns. It is true that nothing is as it appears on the surface. Deeper questions and insight into motivations must be sought. A "slam-dunk" confirmation of Mr. Principi would clearly not be to the best interest of our nation and an insult to our veterans.
