The reason I was in this website was because i was cheking on what the ex-prisioners of war medal was.I was interested in it for my father because he was a POW from Vietnam and i think he deserves a whole lot of medals for being there and doing what he did. PTSD has a major effect on POW and my father is one of many who has it.

I have been the POW Coordinator for the Chicago Regional Office for 18 years so most POW's in Illinois know me and how to reach me.It might be different in other states. This would be an excellent update to your home page.

While on a patrol we walked into a trap in the hedgerows.I was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans who probably saved my life by stopping the bleeding, as I was in no condition to help myself. After beong treated by the German doctors at their field hospital, I was taken to a hospital for British and American prisoners at Rennes where I was held for a month before being evacuated by a 16 day boxcar ride to Stalag XII-A at Limburg, Germany

I am the wife of a POW with 100% disability. It has come to my attention that the dependency and indemnity compensation may not be paid if the death certificate signed by the doctor did not have written on it in these words, "death due to service-connected causes." Is this true? Must it be written in this way to save spouse from problems when they apply for their share of monthly payments? What if spouse is killed in a homicide or car or airplane crash and this is put on the death certificate? what then? What would be the steps taken to still receive (DIC)? Would like to hear from other spouses that may have had problems in the way the death certificate was signed. Thank you for any help that you can give. Dorothy Skarles

Hello Everyone,
I want to say I realize what a wonderful site this is and what it means to have such caring people take time out of their lives to give us all this gift. Thank you!!
I began my search for my father Ronald Paul Mc? about 2 years ago. I had many "good" reasons for doing so, but as I started looking in the Korean POW sites I began to realize that my father is not only special in my heart he must be in others as well. He was a POW in Korea and the things that was done to him is just too hard to think about some times.
Still he survived his capture, but I often wonder if he has survived the memories of that cruel war. I know little girls think of their fathers as heros, but it is only now that I am grown that realize just what a hero he was, is and will always be. I estimate he was about 19 when he went to Korea; he was still a boy in most respects. Whatever his pain and fear then I know he had to swallow. I just wish I could have been there for him in spirit, and now in any way he wants or needs me. I was told he didn't talk about the war much, but did express a lot guilt and those memories tormented him. I pray for his peace of mind every day. If I had only one wish now it would be that HE and All of the Men and Women of that war have peace in their minds and hearts. If wishes truly came true what a gift it would be to know that all of the missing and lost would come home this Christmas. Our prayers and the pursuit of what is good and right will have to do, but in #'s all these things are possible.
Thank you for reading I get really emotional when I think about our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and other relatives that gave their every thing for our gov. and the rest of us. This war will never be forgotten!!
My father ended up in Chicago IL. after the war working as a brickmason. He helped build the Sears Tower, and has his name engraved in one of the wooden beams. There are just so many things to be proud of in him!! If you know him please let me know. I want to tell him I love him and he is and has always been beautiful in my eyes.
Sincerely, with best wishes

I was accessing the Internet for information on copper mines in Japan and Clyde McKee's biography came up. As you may now be aware, the British Government has, after over 50 years, agreed to compensate the British serving forces and the civilian internees who fell and had to surrender to the Japanese. It is a great pity that the Japanese did not see fit to do this, but they will say that it is part of the then Bushido culture. My late husband and my sister-in-law's husband were both 'guests' of Emperor Hirohito. The former in Stanley, Hong Kong being shipped out to mainland Japan to Nagasaki shipyard, where he was forced to work on ships riveting with no protection and this ruined his eyesight and to the copper mines in Osaka. My sister-in-law's husband might have been considered luckier, as he was held captive throughout the war in Hong Kong.

My late husband died at the age of 60 in 1977, partly caused by his treatment under the Japanese - he did receive a war disability pension from the government. It did not help that he could speak a certain amount of the language and was an interpreter - no wonder he suffered nightmares from the mock executions that he underwent. Because I was only 26 when we were married and had a great interest in history, I was able to obtain more information about his treatment under the Japanese than this family. His brother, a doctor, became a POW when Singapore fell in February 1942.

I send my deepest sympathy to Clyde's family. I am not a religious person, but I do hope that there is never another World War where innocent men, women and children have to perish, as a result of international politics and the ambition to become 'masters of the world'.

Both my late husband, his brother and his then future brother-in-law were all disgusted with the way that the war in the Far East became known and regularly accepted as the 'Forgotten War'. They all fought just as bravely as those in the European theatre of war - more so - without the back-up they so badly needed.

Great web site,
In this millennium year we who were POW's at out age enjoy a theme, "Celebration of Life, Focus on Faith." For many of us it is a 55th Anniversary celebration of liberation at Moosburg. The 345 mile forceed march from Preum, Gerolstein, Limburg, Dulag Luft, Neremburg and Moosburg. How better way than to write the story.
For more about my POW days read my book, "A View From The Tail, The Last Mission."

Thanks,

Note from Administrator: - We have added the application form to our "POW Medal" page. Please follow instructions to print it. Many POWs have been able to obtain this medal even though their records were lost in the fire. Submit as much proof as you can to substantiate your claim as detailed in the instructions. Please note it is not uncommon for it to take up to 12 months to hear anything after you apply.

Hi. I am not a POW, but my grandfather is. He was captured during WWII, over Germany when the airplane he was aboard was bombed, caught fire and crashed. He was knocked unconscious and landed in a tree, hanging by his parachute. He was a prisoner for 10 months. I was not even aware that a medal existed for POW's until a few months ago. I would appreciate it if someone could please tell me how I could go about getting a very much deserved POW medal for my aging grandfather. Thank you!

My father Mr James McHarg Miller was a prisoner during the second world war. He was captured on Christmas Day in 1941 in Hong Kong. He was in several camps finally in Notogawa until the war was over. Dad was a member of the Royal Scots and was stationed Tai Mo Shan in the New Territories of China manning the radio station. Dad was on the Lisbon Maru when the ship was torpedoed and several of his best mates died. Dad is now 85 years old. It is only a few years ago that dad would talk about it and has written a short story on his life during the war. Every christmas day we as children could not understand why Dad was never jolly on that day now we do. There is not much information on Notogawa nor any photos that I've seen. Its almost like the camp never existed. Dad is still very bitter.

I am looking for a person I think his last name was Vanputtman. He was taken prisoner in 1968 and latter escaped in 1970. Of course the Vietnam conflict. I was 50 yds away when he was captured. Was wondering if he was doing OK. I was wondering if he could give me some information about who Charlie was because he could have killed me at least 20 times.

My dad, Ike Franklin, was very active in this organization until his death in 1990. I'd like to see a search feature on this website where I could look up names of some of his former buddies. It's a shame he couldn't have lived to see the way the internet has developed. He was a computer systems engineer, and enjoyed communicating through his Commodore computer until shortly before his death. He'd be amazed at what we can do now.

Note from Administrator: We already have a search feature. It is on our main page near the bottom.

My name is Georgie Howell. I live in Little Rock, Arkansas. I am from Williamsburg, Virginia my brother is dead now but I wish to find out about his time in the POW camp and to see if they give medals to the POWs families. His wife is dead also but he has two sons alive and a daughter alive. If my brother was entitled to this medal then I think his children should get it. I was very proud of my brother who helped make my country a better place and I don't want to see his remembery died. His name was David James Baxter he was from Williamsburg, Virginia. He was the son of Martha Baxter Dunston of Williamsburg, Virginia. Father James Baxter. Please send me any information on this matter or any papers you can. Thank you. Note from Administrator: - As a result of your inquiry we have added a page with this information, titled "POW Medal".

Hello. I am very impressed with the American Ex-Pow website. My late Father Clifton"Tim"Cockrell was a prisoner of war in Japan for 3 and a half years. He was with the 200th CAC Headquarters Battery. I am a NOK and Life member of this proud organization. I do have a question though. Is there any word on a Cloth Strip for NOK's? Thank you for your time and effort on this website.

Sincerely yours,

John C. Cockrell

I still think there should be a cap for women, not like a nurse's cap as we had in the past, but similar to the ones the men wear - perhaps just in women's sizes. The sports cap is not especially appealing to most women, either.

My Father, Ellis Scifres, was a POW in Germany during World War II. He was serving with the 687th Field Artillery Batallion (he served in Headquarters Battery initially and was transferred to Battery C in November, 1944) and was captured on Dec. 16, 1944 -- the day the Battle of the Bulge began. We do not know what POW Camp he was held at but understand that he was liberated on April 17. Dad passed away in 1980 -- without ever talking to us about his experiences as a POW. Have recently attended a reunion of the 687th in St. Louis and am seeking information that would help us to know more about his experiences. Anyone have any ideas about how we can fill in some of these gaps. Would love to find someone who was a POW with my Dad or who remembered him during his Army days. Thanks for this web site -- I'm going to share its address with my three sisters.

Ernest Bockstanz, I have sent you email with the address of our NSO office.

Richard Burt, the concurrent payment bill did not pass this year. It was taken out of the final appropriations bill that was passed by the Congress last week. We will try again.

Janis Moyer Lynch, please contact our MedSearch department at medsrch@flash.net for more information on Stalag 7A.

Melody Conrad, I'm sorry but we don't have any information on Col. Fortier. I will ask our Editor to put a notice in our information column. Maybe one of our members can help.
Thank you for your interest.

I am a life member of this organization and have been for quite sometime. I have been rated at 100% disabled for about a year.
I am also retired military and have been drawing retired pay up to when I began receiving disability compensation and have since lost that funding because my disability pay was more than my retirement.  I am aware of a bill to restore this inequity and have written both of my senators and congressman about it as suggested by Steve Yarema. Does anyone have any late data on how this legislation is going? I would be grateful for an update if anyone is listening. I have appreciated the help for us out here in the sticks given by the Bulletin.
God bless,
Dick Burt
