His unit got cut off along the way by a Panzier Division of German soldiers and taken prisoners. He was sent to East Germany and Poland where he dug ditches in summer and dealt with frozen feet, ears and fingers in winter. Liberated in Czechoslovakia at Prague by Russians.
After returning to civilian life Ed became a mail letter carrier, ranched and farmed. He and his wife Wilma raised four daughters and as son who blessed them with them four granddaughters and four grandsons.
